Berrien Fragos Thorn Art Scholarship for Migrant Farmworkers

These creative art scholarships have been created to foster and encourage the creative talents of individuals who have a history of migration in order to get work in the agricultural industry. This scholarship program is funded by a bequest from Berrien Fragos Thorn. Applicants must be able to show interest in pursuing further development of their talents in any of the different disciplines of art.

Amount: $500 to $2,500
Number of Scholarship Awards: 3
Deadline: June 1st and November 1st of each year (Note: There is no deadline for grants under $500; request will be reviewed case-by-case)
GPA: There is no minimum GPA requirement for this scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

– Candidates must be at least 16 years of age
– Candidates do not need to be enrolled in school to apply
– Candidates must have a history of movement to obtain work in agriculture
– Candidates must be able to demonstrate an interest in pursuing further development of their talents in one of the following disciplines:

o Visual arts – painting, sculpture, photography, etc.
o Performing arts – dance, theater, music, etc.
o Media arts – film, video, animation, computer graphics, etc.
o Crafts – traditional folk arts, furniture, pottery, weaving, etc.
o Literature – poetry, short stories, etc.

Application Process:

If applying for grants under $500:

1. Go to www.migrants.net and download the Scholarship Application Form.

2. Complete only Sections A and C of the application. Since there is no essay requirement, the Letter of Requirement is crucial in the selection process and should address the quality of both the applicant and the intended project.

If applying for grants up to $2,500:

1. Download and complete all sections of the application form.

2. Provide a budget or documentation of your expenses along with the application. The money may be used for workshops, materials, study with a mentor, course enrollment, mileage, lost wages, etc.

3. Include a portfolio or sample of your work, such as photos, tapes, videos, etc. You’ll need to indicate on your application the type of material you will provide.

4. You will also need to provide Letter(s) of Recommendation that addresses your work, qualify of the opportunity sought, and your preparation in the discipline. One of the letters should come from a teacher, mentor, or art professional.
