Central Florida Jazz Society Scholarships

The Central Florida Jazz Society (CFJS) Scholarship Program started as a dream of Sid and Karen Weinberg. Sid was a well-known saxophonist during the time when the Jazz scene in Orlando was still starting. Thanks to the help of Weinberg’s influence, the CFJS can point with some degree of pride to a 30-year history of helping young, passionate Jazz musicians further their education.

During the CFJS’s earlier years, the Society’s publicity and applicants were very few. Auditions back then were very casual and time-consuming. Over the years, more than 200 students have auditioned for this scholarship program from over forty (40) different schools; some of the applicants come from as far away as the Eastman Conservatory in Rochester, NY. The program started giving $200 scholarships and now has awarded numerous students with over $70,000 in scholarships. Last year, the CFJS awarded 5 young, talented musicians with scholarships worth a total of $5,000.

The CFJS was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1974 to:

• Preserve jazz as America’s original contribution to the arts;
• Present monthly concerts in which the CFJS members can hear and enjoy different forms of the jazz art;
• Promote live jazz music and local jazz musicians in Central Florida;
• Provide a scholarship program for deserving young musicians and assist in the community’s jazz education.
