Don Diego Fund Employee Award


The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit organization that gives financial help to high school seniors who take part in the different activities and events that are held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, including the San Diego County Fair. Since the first scholarships were given in 1986, the Foundation has given over $536,000 in awards and grants to numerous college-bound students who are in pursuit of a college degree.

Eligible Students:

Students must show proof of employment (prior to the applying year) by the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Premier Food Service, or a commercial or carnival contractor.

Additional Requirements:

Applicants must meet the following in order to qualify for the scholarship award:
– Applicants must be a resident of San Diego County and are senior high school students who are expected to graduate no later than July.
– Applicants must provide a certified copy of their high school transcripts along with their application.
– The award money must be used towards the recipient’s education at a four-year institution or a two-year college where a vocational major or course work is completed in order to transfer to a 4-year college/university. The recipient’s award will be sent to the school’s Financial Aid Office as soon as the student’s verification of enrollment is submitted.
– The full amount of the scholarship must be used within four (4) years. If the total amount is not used within that time, the recipient must apply for an extension or the money will be returned to the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation.

Application Process:

1. Fill out the application form completely and legibly. The completing the online application is more preferable.
2. Attach a certified copy of your most recent high school transcript of records.
3. Write the essay on the provided topic.
4. Provide two letters of recommendation
5. Provide a financial statement
6. Provide proof of employment by the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Premier Food Service, or by a commercial/carnival contractor.
7. Submit all application materials to:

Selection Criteria:

All submitted applications are screened by the appropriate 4-H Leaders, FFA Advisors, and/or Del Mar staff members. Semifinalists will be selected for each category. Once all categories have semi-finalists, the winners will be chosen by the members of the Board of Directors for the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation. Financial need is not the only basis for selecting the winners.

In addition to the award money that the winners will receive, the most outstanding student of the $5,000 financial aid will be awarded the Spanjian Family Grant and will receive a total of $10,000.
