Don Diego Fund Exhibitor Participant Award


The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation provides financial aid to deserving students who are planning to attend an accredited college or university and is living in San Diego County. Founded in 1986, the Foundation was created as a lasting memory to Tom Hernandez, who was the legendary host of the San Diego County Fair from 1947 until 1984.

Don Diego Fund Exhibitor Award Information:

Amount: $1,000 to $5,000
Number of Scholarship Awards: one $5000 award, one $2500 award, and one $1000 award

Major: Applicants are free to choose their course. However, it’s preferred if they selected a course/major that’s related to agriculture, education, or entertainment and recreation.
Eligible Students: students who have participated, in the year before applying, in a competitive exhibit department or participated in the Fair through the Special Events Department, at the San Diego County Fair, the Del Mar National Horse Show, or other horse-riding events at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and/or Horsepark. The competitive exhibit may be a Student Showcase, Student Landscape, Creative Kids, or an Equestrian Event.

Additional Requirements:

– An applicant must be a current resident of San Diego County and is a high school senior that’s expected to graduate no later than July.
– Applicants must be able to provide a certified copy of their high school transcripts along with their completed application forms.
– The scholarship money must be used only towards the winner’s education at a four-year college/university or at a two-year college where the winner is taking up a vocational major or coursework in anticipation of transferring to an accredited four-year college or university.
– The total amount of the scholarship award must be used within 4 years from when it was released. If the winner fails to use the total amount, he/she must file for an extension or else the remaining money will be returned to the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation.

Selection Process:

All submitted applications will be screened by the appropriate 4-H Leaders, FFA Advisors, and/or Del Mar Fairgrounds staff members. Semifinalists will be selected for each category. The winners of the awards will be selected by the members of the Don Diego Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors.

Selection Criteria:

The scholarship categories are not awarded based on financial need alone. The selection committee will also consider an applicant’s potential to succeed, leadership skills, and contributions to his/her community.
Spanjian Family Scholarship.

This award is given to the most outstanding $5,000 top applicant. The selected winner will receive an additional $5,000. The scholarship was created back in 2013 as a way to honor the Robert Spanjian, a Don Diego founder who has served as the Foundation’s Secretary-Treasurer since its establishment in 1986.
