Dr. Alma Adams Scholarships

The Dr. Alma Adams Scholarship program was named after Legacy’s founding board member. This scholarship program annually provides two $5,000 scholarships to undergraduate and/or graduate students who are enrolled at an accredited college/university in the U.S., and are pursuing degrees that have some relation to the prevention and/or control of the tobacco industry.

Amount: $5,000
Number of Scholarship Awards: Up to two students can receive the award
Deadline: April 30; Annually
GPA: A GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or its equivalent)

Additional Requirements:

– Applicants must be a United States citizen or a permanent legal resident
– Applicants must be able to maintain “B” average for most of the recent academic year
– Applicants must be pursuing a field of study in public health, communications, social work, liberal arts, education, and other related fields
– Applicants must demonstrate financial need
– Applicants must be able to show proof of community service activities in an underserved community setting

Application Process:

1. Go to the official Legacy website and download the scholarship application.

2. Complete you the application on your computer, or print and fill it out manually.

3. File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to receive your Student Aid Report (SAR). Include your SAR to your application.

4. Provide official or unofficial copies of all college transcript(s), or high school transcript (for high school applicants)

5. Compose a 500-word, double-spaced personal statement reflecting your career goals and objectives in public health, communications, social work, education, and other similar fields. Please also discuss your tobacco control interest and/or experience and/or record of community service in an underserved community setting.

6. Provide one original sample of your health communication material that conveys a health message, or raises community awareness of the adverse effects of commercial tobacco. Your entry material can be an essay, script, or sketches for murals or paintings, musical score recordings, etc. Entries can be submitted as a PowerPoint presentation, digitally scanned visuals, Web site images, audio files, DVD, or other forms of hard copy materials.

7. Include two letters of recommendations from faculty members, counselors, mentors, and/or supervisors who know you well enough to comment on your community service activities.

3. Academic transcripts

4. Personal statement

5. Original health communication material sample

6. Two (2) letters of recommendation

Selection Criteria:

The scholarship awards will be granted based on the following criteria:

• Record of commitment of community service on behalf of an underserved population related to tobacco prevention and/or control
• Best use of visual arts, media, creative writing, or other creative ways to express culturally appropriate health messages aimed at raining community awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco.
