Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship

The Frank L. Greathouse Government Accounting Scholarship program is annually funded and awarded by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). Two (2) $6,000 scholarships are offered to full-time (undergraduate or graduate) students who are preparing for careers in state or local government finance.

Additional Requirements:

– Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited undergraduate/graduate accounting program and preparing for a career in state and local government finance
– Must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada
– Undergraduate students must be in the process of completing at least their junior year by the time this scholarship is awarded
– Applicants must not be previous winners of a scholarship program administered by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada
– Applicants must be able to get a recommendation from their academic advisor or the accounting program chair

Application Process:

1. Get a copy of the scholarship application packet; and fill out the scholarship application form completely.
2. On a separate sheet, compose a statement describing your proposed state and local government finance career plans and, if applicable, plan of graduate study. Please be specific about what type of government career you plan to pursue and why you want to pursue it. You should also describe any work experience you had, including internships and volunteer work, which are relative to your state and local government finance career choice, or postgraduate plans to study.
3. Attach official copies of your undergraduate and/or graduate grade transcripts.
4. Update your resume and include it in your application packet.
5. Ask your academic advisor or the department chair to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf.
6. You may also ask a person from your community to write you a letter of recommendation and include it to your application.
7. Have your academic advisor or accounting program chair sign all the documents mentioned above and place them in a single envelope.

Selection Criteria:

The Scholarship Committee will review all submitted applications and give the awards to two candidates who best meet the following criteria:

• Statement of proposed career plan in state and local government finance and proposed plan of graduate study, if applicable.
• Past academic performance and work history.
• Strength of past coursework and present plan of study, as it relates to a career in the public sector.
• Undergraduate and/or graduate GPA.
• Letters of recommendations by your academic reference, chair of the accounting program, and other individuals.

Applicants will be notified by the Committee of their decision on or before April 22. If selected as a winner, you will be invited to attend the Government Finance Officers Association’s annual conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where the award will be presented. The winners will receive complementary annual conference registration, transportation cost to Minneapolis, and hotel accommodations.
