Fukunaga Scholarship Foundation

This scholarship program was established to encourage high school students in Hawaii to pursue postsecondary education in Business at any accredited 4-year college/university. College undergraduates who meet the eligibility criteria are also encouraged to apply for this scholarship.

The Fukunaga Scholarship Foundation (FSF) awards over $150,000 in scholarships each year to help them continue their education after graduating from high school. Since its establishment in 1950, the Foundation has helped support more than 400 students with its scholarship program.

Award Information:

Amount: $4,000 each year
Number of Scholarship Awards: Approximately 10 scholarships will be awarded this year
Deadline: March 1
Renewable: Yes; for up to 4 years, provided that the recipient continues to meet the eligibility requirement
GPA: 3.0 or higher
Major: Accounting, Business Administration, General Business, Management, Economics, Finance, Human Resources, International Business, International Management, and other business-related courses
Eligible Students: College undergraduates and graduating high school seniors

– Graduates of public schools in Hawaii must earn the BOE Recognition Diploma with Honors
– Graduates of private schools in Hawaii must earn an equivalent number of credits and GPA as public school graduates.
– Must be U.S. citizens and residents of Hawaii and plan to eventually return to Hawaii or the Pacific Island region to contribute to its growth and welfare
– Must have an interest in Business and have participated in school activities and community service which demonstrate leadership potential and responsibility
– Must be able to impress fellow students, members of the faculty, and members of the community as individuals deserving of an opportunity to start or to continue to higher education
– Must be enrolled as full-time students taking up any major mentioned above. Any major other that those listed requires prior approval of the selection committee

Application Process:

1. Get a copy of the application form and complete the four-page application for the current year. You must place your original signature on the last page of the application once you are through. Make sure to fill in the application completely and accurately. You may either type or neatly print your responses to the application. (Note: Illegible applications may not be considered by the committee.)
2. File your Free Application for Federal Student Aid-Student Aid Report (FAFSA-SAR). Include a copy of your FAFSA-SAR indicating your EFC (Expected Family Contribution). Your need for financial help will be considered based on financial resources available through Financial Aid and through your family’s assets and income.
3. Request an official copy of your school transcript, indicating your GPA and class standing. Your school may submit the transcript directly to the Foundation or give it to you in a sealed envelope.
4. Include college entrance test scores (ACT/SAT), if available, or a signed statement explaining why the test scores are not available.
5. Provide at least two (2) recommendation letters from your principal, teacher, counselor, or members of the community.

Selection Criteria:

After reviewing all applications, the scholarship committee will choose a number of applicants as finalists. Finalists will be invited for a brief personal interview with the committee. Finalists will be required to submit their photos for identification purposes before the interviews. The award recipients are selected by the scholarship committee based on the following:

• Financial need
• Academic achievement (including your class standing)
• Leadership qualities
• A desire to attend college
• Special circumstances
• Personal interview
