Lighthouse Scholarship and Career Awards

Lighthouse International is an affiliate of the Lighthouse Guild International, an organization dedicated to helping those who are blind and visually impaired through prevention, treatment, and empowerment. Their Scholarship and Career Awards reward excellence and recognize accomplishments of visually impaired students who are still trying to pursue a higher education and a better future.

Amount: $5,000
Award Categories:
– College-Bound Awards – given to high school seniors or recent high school graduates who are planning to start their college education.
– Undergraduate Award I – for college students who are able to apply anytime during their undergraduate studies.
– Undergraduate Award II – for college students pursuing an undergraduate degree after an absence of 10 years or more from high school or from college.
– The Judy Van Nostrand Arts Award – given a student distinguished in a creative endeavor such as visual arts, writing, music, graphic arts, etc.
– The Harry G. Starr Endowed Scholarship
– The Trinka Davis Graduate Award
– The Syde Hurdus President’s Award

Eligible Students: Visually impaired (i.e. severe reduction in vision that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses) students studying at the college level.

Additional Requirements:

– Must be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident
– Must be enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited college/university in one of the 50 states, Washington D.C., or a U.S. territory
– Must demonstrate financial need
– Must not be a previous SCA recipient or a current Lighthouse employee

Application Process:

1. Complete the application form (

2. Write essays on the provided topics.

3. Provide proof of visual impairment such as a statement coming from an ophthalmologist, optometrist, or State Rehabilitation Agency.

4. Attach a copy of most recent transcripts (the copies may be certified or uncertified).

5. Include your score reports for standardized test scores.

6. Provide two (2) recommendation letters that attests to your accomplishments and character. One of the letters should come from someone who knows the applicant outside of the classroom.

7. Provide proof of acceptance into an accredited college/university (college-bound students and students enrolling in a new program only).

Essay Topics:

In 400 to 600 words, please address the following points:

The impact your visual impairment has had on you as a student
The challenges you faced and how you overcame them
Extracurricular activities you participated and other passions you might have outside the classroom
Any achievements or accomplishments that you are particularly proud of
What distinguishes you from other Lighthouse scholarship applicants

Note: The Judy Van Nostrand Arts Award and the Syde Hurdus Award have additional essays that applicants need to provide.

Expectation from award recipients:

– Submit a formal headshot photo for publication upon notification of award.
– Provide proof of citizenship and their SS number for IRS reporting purposes.
– Attend the Scholarship and Career Awards Ceremony and reception that will be held on June 4.
– Prepare and give a 2-minute acceptance speech.
