Live Out Loud Scholarship Program

Live Out Loud is a nonprofit organization that’s dedicated to inspiring and empowering the LGBT youth by connecting them with successful professionals who are also part of the LGBT community. The organization’s scholarship program aims to help college-bound LGBT students in their pursuit of a degree from an accredited postsecondary educational institution.

Amount: $5,000
Number of Scholarship Awards: 5 (Note: Live Out Loud is not required to give all 5 scholarships annually. The awards are only given to applicants who are approved by the Scholarship Committee based on the established selection criteria.)

Major: This Scholarship program does not require its scholars to pursue a specific course.
Eligible Students: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and/or Transgender students (LGBT) who is pursuing a degree from an accredited college, university, technical/vocational school program.

Additional Requirements:

– Applicants must be graduating high school seniors who are identified as part of the LGBT community.
– Applicants must reside in the Tri-State area including New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
– If chosen to be a finalist, he/she must be able to join in an individual interview that will be scheduled in early April.

Application Process:

1. Complete the application form – applicants will be required to provide their personal, financial, and academic information, as well as personal statements on certain topics.

2. Provide two (2) letters of recommendation – the letters should attest to the applicant’s leadership skills, courage, and commitment to the LGBT issues, and come from academic and/or organization professionals, such as teachers, directors, advisors, etc.

Essay Topics:

1. An integral part of the Live Out Loud’s mission is to connect to the LGBTQ youth with role models. Please tell us who is your role model and why. How have you been a role model in your school and/or community?

2. In a separate essay (with a maximum of 1000 words; typewritten and double-spaced) Please answer the following questions:

i. How have you distinguished yourself as a leader in, or behalf of, the LGBT community?
ii. What leadership roles have you shown during your high school years?
iii. Describe a situation or project you have started? What were the results?
iv. What were the challenges did you come up against while executing your project?
v. How has your project impacted your community?

Selection Criteria:

The selection of the winners is based on:

– Their demonstration of past leadership and community involvement;
– Academic achievement;
– Personal essays;
– Recommendation letters;
– Individual interview;
– Demonstration of financial need;
– Future goals.

Awarding Process:

The Live Out Loud will not distribute the awards until all required documents have been received, including a copy of their acceptance letter into an accredited postsecondary institution and proof of attendance by the relevant admissions office. Live Out Loud will only distribute the awards directly to the educational institution the scholar is attending, and only upon verification of attendance.
