SMART Scholarship for Service

The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program provides an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in the STEM disciplines to receive full tuition support and other benefits such as health coverage and book allowance.

Award Information:

• $22,500 to $38,000 in stipends each year
• Full-tuition support
• Health coverage
• $1,000 book allowance

Major: Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering; Biosciences; Chemical Engineering; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Cognitive, Neural, and Behavioral Sciences; Computer and Computational Sciences; Electrical Engineering; Geo Sciences; Industrial Systems; Information Systems; Mathematics; Physics; Oceanography; Operations Research; and other similar fields
Eligible Students: College Undergraduate and Graduate Students

Eligibility Requirements:

To be considered, applicants must be:
• A United States citizen
• 18 years old or older as of August 1, 2020
• Able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories
• Willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD
• A student in good standing who meets the minimum GPA requirement
• Pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in one of the fields of study listed above
• Enrolled as full-time students in an accredited 4-year college or university approved by the SMART Program Office

Additional Requirements:

• College students who are currently in their 1st year or are enrolled in a First Year Associate’s Program must provide an SAT/ACT Reasoning Test Score
• Graduate students must have taken the GRE and provide a copy of their test scores

3. References Page: You are required to provide the contact information for at least three (3) individuals in order to send a request to each. Your references should be scientists, engineers, faculty members, or other individuals who have current /recent knowledge of your academic achievements and professional experiences.

4. Provide a transcript for each school you listed prior to Fall 2014. Please Ensure that the transcript you upload meets the following:

a. Must be legible
b. Must have your name on it
c. Must clearly show the name of your school
d. Must provide the grade scale your school used as the last page of the document (if the school does not use a 4.0 grade scale)
