Society of Women Engineers Golden Gate Section Scholarship

The Golden Gate Section is offered by the Society of Women Engineers. The SWE-GGS has one of the top five scholarship programs as ranked against other SWE sections all across the United States. This scholarship program is aimed towards local young Bay Area women graduating from high school and planning to pursue degrees in engineering or computer science.

Amount: $1,000
Number of Scholarships Offered: 10 to 15 scholarships are awarded each year
Start of Application Period: Applications will be sent to Bay Area high schools in January
Deadline: March 28
GPA: No minimum GPA requirement is specified

Additional Requirements:

To be considered for this, an applicant must be:
– Female
– Residing or attending school in the boundaries of the Golden Gate Section: San Francisco, Marin, Nape, Sonoma, San Mateo counties, Alameda counties, and parts of Contra Costa counties. – A graduating high school senior planning to obtain a degree at an accredited 4-year college or university in engineering or computer science.

Application Process:

1. Get a copy of the Scholarship Application Form from http://ggs.swe.org/scholarship.html. You may type or print your responses to complete the application form.

2. Include an official copy of your high school transcript(s) showing grades for the entire enrollment in all high schools you attended.

3. Provide a summary of the activities you participated. Please include both technical and non-technical activities, and dates of participation.

4. Provide two (2) letters of reference – You can ask your high school teachers and/or persons who have personally known you for at least 2 years and who are not members or relatives of your family.

5. Provide a brief resume of paid or volunteer work experience. Don’t forget to mention your duties, starting and ending dates, and other relevant information.

6. Compose an essay (one page or less) discussing:
a. Why you would like to be an engineer or a related professional;
b. What your goals are as an engineer or related professional; and
c. Why you deserve a scholarship.

7. Mail all application materials in a single envelope to:

Qualified applications will be evaluated based on a set of diverse criteria that seeks to find highly qualified and well-rounded students with a serious commitment to possess an engineering degree and career. Applications will be evaluated based on:

• Scholastic Performance
• Activities including work experience, volunteer work, and extracurricular activities, especially with demonstrated leadership skills and potential
• Essay
• Letters of reference
• Financial need
• Completeness of application
